In this Sound Journey, Mark will guide you through an intense and amazing exploration of resonance, overtones, timbre, rhythm, harmony… In the 1990s he learned that sound, music, resonance and cyclical patterns can be powerful tools for change and transformation. These tools sit at the center of our being and are available to all of us, but we usually do not recognize them. Once we begin to listen to the actual nature of sounds and voices, these vibrations and resonances have the ability to bring you closer to your nature of an energetic being, bypassing the dualistic notion of body-mind. In working with words, non-sense syllables, noises, musical sounds, chanting, mantras, overtone singing, as well as with body movements or dance, you re-discover yourself as a bundle of moving energies that constantly changes. Together we contemplate questions about ourselves as complex networks of vibration, seeking answers not so much through reason, but through direct experience, through the poetry of sounds, and through our creative imagination.

After a week you understand better how and why you resonate in the way you do; how you can make sounds you had never thought you would or could make, like overtone singing; how to focus your listening to a much more subtle level; how music, sound and listening exercises can help you to attune to the needs of body and mind and to the world around you.

We work with all of sound’s energies, all your vocal potential, in order to get you started living a richer, healthier, more vibrant and resonant life.

“So much happiness and joy of being with you.
And it’s where I find ME.
I should sing it. Sing it for you.
To let you know how much you give me.
– Sky from Hsinchu

“I really enjoy sound flowing out freely and impulsively. Although I am the singer, I am also the listener, I hear sound coming out of my mouth, naturally flowing.
I feel sound is the language of the soul, something language cannot express.
I really wish to learn overtone singing.
I feel overtone singing opens up some unknown and unfathomable territories.
– Amano from Hsinchu

“I’ve been attending voice yoga and RESONANCE for the past two years. Mark’s gentle attitude and patient pace make me willing to try to use my body and voice to open up to a bigger world beyond. Even noise can become interesting. With Mark’s guidance, I return to my body, my breath effortlessly, the nervousness is gone. Once relaxed, the heart becomes free. Play awakes instincts, and my own voice becomes my companion for hearing myself. Mark’s gentle and firm guidance helps me sense the tightening of my throat and body, so that I can undo the tension and open up.
– Nancy from Taipei

Mark van Tongeren is a Dutch sound explorer and artistic researcher with a deep interest in the synergy of arts, sciences and contemplative traditions. Trained as an ethnomusicologist, much of Mark’s work is grounded in the world’s traditional musics. As a performer he primarily uses all sorts of vocal techniques, overtone singing, Jew’s harps, sound objects and electronics.

In the 1990s, he started his artistic output as a musician and bricolateur in experimental so-called ‘object theatre’ in the Netherlands. In the 2000s he moved into improv, with Amsterdam-based collective Oorbeek and many international collaborations. He then did a PhD in Artistic Research at Leiden University/Orpheus Institute Ghent. In the ‘10s, he began exploring the embodied performer more deeply, mainly in a series of dance pieces in Taiwan, where he lives.

He is best known for his work in the experimental voice, especially overtone singing, which he has steadily explored as a performer and ethnomusicologist in traditional conexts (Tuva / Mongolia / Tibet / Mediterranean) as well as in contemporary and experimental music.
