Oorbeek: Almost Certainly Not Influenced By

Good news for the eclectic reader/listener. Recently the question of Oorbeek’s influences erupted again, leading to wild speculations as to who or what might be Oorbeek’s influences. The seven members of Oorbeek (site) decided to lift the veil of the collective’s pastiche of musical styles. Each one of them chose three tracks from the pre-Oorbeek era (pre-2002) that they feel somehow reminds them of Oorbeek. However, these tracks may still be recent discoveries for us and not actual influences in the Oorbeek sound and procedures. We are uncertain what created the Oorbeek sound but what we do know is, well, the artists in these playlist are or were almost certainly not influenced by Oorbeek. May this list put an end to the wildest speculations!

And there is more: if you can guess for seven or more tracks which member of Oorbeek brought it in, you can win a copy of Oorbeek’s latest album signed by all members. It is not necessary to submit your guess for all tracks or to get at least one track right for each member of Oorbeek. If you got Serge and Alice’s selections right plus one more, the album can be yours. In case of multiple winners we blindly draw one who gets the album, and others get a copy of our latest 7”. And heck, why not, if there are multiple losers, the most original loser gets the album.

For your convenience, we made an excel sheet with all titles where you can write up your guesses. The artists appear on alphabetical order (different from the YouTube list, where everything got a bit mixed up and long tracks are last). De Oorbeek Challenge

Goed nieuws voor de eclectische lezer/luisteraar. Oorbeek (site) is het collectief dat muziek maakt die moeilijk in welke categorie dan ook te plaatsen is en dat al ruim twintig jaar bestaat (beluister het laatste album Kavel op Spotify of Apple als je ons nog nooit gehoord hebt). Onlangs kwam de vraag naar de invloeden van Oorbeek opnieuw naar boven, wat leidde tot wilde speculaties. De zeven leden van Oorbeek besloten een tipje van de sluier rondom de pastiche van muziekstijlen op te lichten. Ieder van hen koos drie nummers uit het pre-Oorbeek-tijdperk (voor 2002) die op de een of andere manier aan Oorbeek doen denken. Deze nummers kunnen echter nog steeds recente ontdekkingen voor ons zijn (en geen daadwerkelijke invloed in het ontstaan van de Oorbeek-klank en -procedures). We beweren niet dat we weten waardoor het Oorbeek-geluid is ontstaan. Wat we wel beweren is dat de artiesten in deze afspeellijst, zeg maar, vrijwel zeker niet door Oorbeek zijn beïnvloed. Moge deze lijst een einde maken aan de wildste speculaties!

En er is meer: als jij bij zeven of meer nummers kunt raden welk lid van Oorbeek het heeft ingebracht, maak je kans op een door alle leden gesigneerd exemplaar van Oorbeek’s nieuwste album. Als je bijvoorbeeld mijn 3 selecties en die van Alice goed hebt plus nog één, dan kan het album van jou zijn. Als er meerdere winnaars zijn, trekken we blindelings iemand die het album krijgt, en anderen krijgen een exemplaar van onze nieuwste 7”.
